The No. 4 McHi Bulldogs lost their perfect 6-0 season to the unrelenting Mustangs last Friday night in an epic campaign lasting until second overtime. With expectations favoring the Bulldogs, the Mustangs remained calm and drilled their fourth consecutive win into the Bulldog charisma.

“Endurance,” Cesar Perez (12) said, “was the deciding factor in Friday’s game. What trapped us last week against Weslaco High was the sheer length of the game; 63-56.”

The stakes were high, and while the Mustangs held a lead in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs forced in an equalizer to send the game into overtime. Throughout overtime, the commanding Mustangs put the pressure on the Bulldogs with consecutive two point conversions. This forced pressure on the Bulldogs to go for the two-points too, but were unable to succumb the Mustang defense.

“Before the last play, we called an outside blitz; we knew they were going to run because they were three yards from the end zone,” Cody Stites (12) said.

Thursday evening, the Mustangs will need to beat the Bears in order to make a 4th appearance at playoffs. Both teams this week are 4-3.

“That would be a huge milestone for us,” Stites said, “they have the number one defense hitting our number one offense. We need to contain their quarterback if we are to succeed at stopping their offense.”
