As the sun sets in, the trombone section poses for a picture in front of the ocean. The jazz band had just competed in the ARTS Festival Competition hosted by Port Isabel High School.

“We went into the competition wanting to do good,” Brandon Cortez (11) said. “We wanted [a] superior overall ratings.”

The band practiced twice a week for two hours to prepare for this awaiting moment.

“Since the jazz band doesn’t meet during the day we had to make sure we were able to put in the practice time,” Cortez said. “Everyone in the band had to be committed to their role.”

In the end, the band placed second over with superior ratings, which “are the highest ratings you can get.”

“Considering we had so little practice time to work with, I was really happy with our results,” Cortez said.

After the competition, the band went to South Padre Island to have dinner at Dirty Al’s.

“It was nice that we were able to have dinner together and unwind,” Cortez said. “The whole experience was really fun.”
