DECA stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America and is a substantial club to be in. After competing at district at the McAllen Convention Center, DECA members shined throughout the competition.

Wayne Phillips (11), Nelda Argenal (12), Adriana Gonzalez (12), Izabella Gutierrez (12) and in particular Maria Cortinas (12) made it to the DECA Texas State Competition in San Antonio.

This is Cortinas’ first year in DECA, and with the help of her partner Nelda Argenal they presented their community service project which qualified them for state.

The event was the Walk for Wishes 5K, in which all proceeds went to the local Make-A-Wish Rio Grande Valley Chapter. The Make-A-Wish foundation grants wishes to children facing life threatening medical conditions.

Cortinas started planning her community project since the beginning of the school year in Sept. With the help of Mrs. Koeneke and FCCLA, who partnered up with DECA, they accomplished the event.

The 5K run raised 1,200 dollars to the Make A Wish Foundation which is outstanding for the organization and for Cortinas’ community project. Cortinas’ project benefited our community and it earned her and Argenal a spot in the Texas State DECA Competition.

State Competition will be on Feb. 23-26 in San Antonio.

Heading into the state competition Cortinas is hoping to advance to nationals taking place at Disneyland,California.

Good luck to all the members!
